Sunday Worship at First Congregational Church, March 7, at 10am

March 3, 2021 by veradaleucc Leave a Comment

Dear Veradale UCC Friends and Members,

I hope you are doing okay as we come to the one year anniversary of Covid Quarentine.  How are you this week? What gives you hope at this time?

We will be visiting The First Congregational Church of Riverside, CA this Sunday. Worship starts at 10am. You can join us in-person at our church or go there from home by going to http://www.fccriverside.org/worship-with-us/live/

If you want to join us in the Zoom Coffee hour, you will need to go to the bottom of the page link and sign up before Sunday. I have signed us up for those in the church building. For those joining from home, I hope you will take a leap and sign-up early for their after worship Zoom. They are so excited to have us coming that they have paid the extra cost to make their Zoom program able to hold more of us.

These visits are deeply nurturing to us as a congregation and to those we visit. Thank you, Veradale! You are an amazing church.

Remember, if you want to worship in-person, let me know as we have a limited number of spaces. For those who come in person, expect:
1. Enter through front door (church wings will both be closed).
2. Only the one bathroom by the front doors will be used.
3. Temperature and names will be taken at the door.
4. Masks are required (we will have masks for forgetful folk). No Face shields unless they include a cloth mask which MUST be worn over the nose. The new more contagious strain of covid requires us to be more vigilant. So, masks must be worn over the nose.
5. Chairs are set at 6’ apart. Please, do not move chairs.
7. The Bibles, Hymnals, pens, pencils, coloring pages are all REMOVED from the sanctuary. If you want to print your own bulletin or bring your own Bible, that is fine.
8. There will be absolutely no eating or drinking in the building.
9. There will be no singing in the sanctuary. We will have hymns but only those on Facebook and Zoom can sing.

Thank you for keeping flexible!

Let me know if you will be in-person this Sunday.

Dear Veradale UCC,
Thank you to Gae Ann, Naomi, Al and Polly, Kathy and Sally, and all who checked in last week. I appreciate learning how you are doing and adding your prayers to mine. How is it today? This week? Do you have prayers of concern or gratitude to share?
We are back to limited in-person worship. Let me know if you will be joining us in the building.

Do you want to read the scripture for this Sunday? Let me know.

Would you be willing to record a welcome message after worship on Sunday?

Be still, my soul! for God is on your side;
bear patiently the cross of grief or pain:
leave to your God to order and provide,
in every change, God faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul! your best, your eternal friend
through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.
Be still, my soul! for God will undertake
to guide in future days as in the past.
Your hope, your confidence, let nothing shake;
all now mysterious shall be clear at last.
Be still, my soul! the waves and winds still know
how Jesus’ power ruled them long ago.
Be still, my soul! the hour will soon be here
when we shall be with God whom we adore;
when disappointment gone, no grief, nor fear,
Sorrow replaced with joy forevermore.
Be still my soul! when change and tears are past,
all safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Listening for God
Mark 8:31-38 (NRSV)
 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”
He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

Listening for God
Genesis 9:8-17 (NRSV)
Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you,  and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.”  God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations:  I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.  When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds,  I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Mark 1:9-15 (NRSV)
In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.  And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.  And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.
Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Gathering
Welcome: Pastor Jim CastroLang, Colville UCC
Call to the Lenten Journey
We gather in the sacred places where we live and open ourselves sincerely to God. Tonight, we begin our Lenten journey.
With the assurance of God’s love and forgiveness, we face the close examination of Lent and gain a new and deeper relationship with the Divine.
It is in the assurance of Easter that we set ourselves on this path.
Wholeness brings a peace in ourselves and our relationships with God and our neighbors.

Breaking Open the Word

Sacred Text:  II Corinthians 6:1-10 Pastor Jess Peacock, Chewelah UCC

6 As we work together with him,[a] we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, “At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you.”

See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! 3 We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, 7 truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Reflection on Ash Wednesday  Pastor Andy CastroLang, Westminster Congregational, UCC

Call to Confession
Pastor Gen Heywood, Veradale UCC
The people of faith have long recognized the relationship between confession and wholeness. Being responsible for our choices, our actions, and our inactions is important step to becoming whole. It is something each one of us must do for ourselves. It is also something that we do together. As a community, we share each other’s brokenness and pain. The forgiveness comes from God. It is a gift.
Sound the alarm. Return to God with all your heart. Seek those life-changing opportunities that God holds out to us every day of our lives.
Prayer of Confession (Unison)
Holy One, we open our hearts to you. See our brokenness. See how
we have not trusted in you. See our need for your direction and
healing. Show us your compassion. Heal us. Help us confront who we are and who you know we can be. Give to us the blessing of forgiveness. Give to us the freedom of repentance and transform our lives by the healing of our souls. We ask in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Silent Reflection
2 minutes for this reflection

Assurance:

Pastor Andy CastroLang, Westminster Congregational, UCC

God forgives us:
O Majesty, O Magnificence, O Mystery, come!
Be the hammer, and break our indifference.
Be the sun, and splinter our shadows.
Be the wind, and scatter our despair.
Yea, in the dry country of our souls, let thy grace rain;
so that we take root in thee, and grow.
Make us trees strong in all seasons, bearing fruit,
giving shade to all the weariness
and shelter to them that are lost.
So we pray to the glory of Jesus Christ
who made the cross tree green and flourishing forever.
Amen.
Reflection on Ash Wednesday and Lent:

Pastor Jess Peacock, Chewelah UCC

(Veradale UCC) Marvin Wilson, Vocals

Prayer over the Ashes
(at this time everyone is invited to hold the package of the ashes in their hands and place the oil near them)
God be with you.
And with you also.
Let us pray.
All: Gracious God, you have created us out of the dust of the earth
and stars. Grant that these ashes may be to us a sign of our
mortality and penitence, so we may remember that only by your
gracious gift are we given life everlasting. Bless this oil to be a reminder of your healing, abundant love. That the only separations from you are ones we create as you are always with us. We pray through the love and mercy of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Invitation for Receiving of Ashes and Oil
Pastor Gen Heywood, Veradale UCC
As we hear the next solo, you are invited as an ancient sign of repentance to kneel or rise as you are able. Take the ashes and place them on your hands. Feel their texture and remember that we are mortal. Place the ashes where you most want God to receive your repentance:

Pastor Andy CastroLang, Westminster Congregational, UCC

In the place you have gone or not gone (feet), the things you have done or not done (hands), the things you have heard or not listened to (near your ears), the things you have seen or refused to see (near you eyes), the things the things you have spoken or not spoken (near mouth), the things you have thought or denied (on the forehead). As you take these these dry ashes upon yourself you could say something like,” Forgive me, God” or “I return to you, Loving God.”
Pastor Jim CastroLang, Colville UCC
Then as a sign of forgiveness and healing, receive an anointing with oil. If someone is with you, let them anoint you and you them. If you are alone, receive the oil to yourself and anoint that place where the ashes have been placed

Pastor Jess Peacock, Chewelah UCC

 As you are anointed, words like, “God loves you and hopes in you. You are forgiven,” might be said. And you might respond, “Thanks be to God.”

Though I may speak with bravest fire, and have the gift to all inspire, and have not love; my words are vain; as sounding brass, and hopeless gain.

Though I may give all I possess, and striving so my love profess, but not be giv’n by love within, the profit soon turns strangely thin.

Come, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship, and are freed.

Listening for God
1 Corinthians 13:1-13 (NRSV)
If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant  or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.

But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end.  For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.

Mark 9:2-9 (NRSV)
Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” He did not know what to say, for they were terrified.Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, “This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!” Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus.
As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

*Hymn: “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

Public domain

Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
‘Til earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of Liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us,
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,
Let us march on ’til victory is won.

Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chastening rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our fathers sighed?
We have come over a way that with tears has been watered,
We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered,
Out from the gloomy past,
‘Til now we stand at last
Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

God of our weary years,
God of our silent tears,
Thou who has brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who has by Thy might
Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray.
Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee,
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand,
May we forever stand,
True to our God,
True to our native land.

Sharing Holy Communion

Pastor: Friends in Christ, we gather at this table mindful of the presence of your Spirit that is here with us.  We seek to honor the request of Jesus given in the scripture.  Of all the teachings Jesus gave to our ancestors, this is one thing he asked them and us to do for him.  He asked us to remember.

When Jesus and his friends sat together at a Passover meal, Jesus took bread; giving God thanks and praise, he broke the bread.  He gave it to his friends saying, “Take this all of you and eat of it.  This is my body that is broken for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.”

After the meal had ended, Jesus poured out the cup and again he gave God thanks and praise.  He gave the cup to his friends and said, “Take this all of you and drink from it.  This is the cup of the new covenant.  Do this as often as you drink of it in remembrance of me.”

Let us pray.

All: Loving God, you are everywhere and we are grateful.  As we enter into this Black History Month, we are especially mindful of the systemic racism in our country that keeps us from full communion with all. Let your presence and love give us strength to transform systems of oppression into communities of full inclusion.

Come, Holy Spirit come.  Bless this bread and this cup and all who have gathered far and near.  Refresh us and renew us as Christ’s body in the world today.  In the name of Jesus, we pray.  Amen.

Pastor: Let us open our hearts, minds, and souls to remembering that Jesus was born, lived, died, and lives still among us.

All: We share the bread and cup remembering that Jesus welcomed all. He revealed that God is one who draws together people of every kind. There is no one outside of God’s love.  As we share in this holy communion, may our eyes be opened to recognize the risen Christ amongst us in all of creation.

Silence

Prayer of Thanksgiving

All: We thank you, God, for your presence at our many tables where we have known the presence of Christ.  Help us to live more fully the way of Christ. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and let us show forth your praise in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.

* Hymn: “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness”

CCLI license #11038266

Spirit, spirit of gentleness,
blow through the wilderness, calling and free,
Spirit, spirit of restlessness,
stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep,
then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;
and over the eons you called to each thing;
“Awake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.”

You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand
and you goaded your people with a law and a land;
and when they were blinded with idols and lies,
then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes.

You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill,
then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still;
and down in the city you called once again,
when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind.

You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes.
From the bondage of sorrow all the captives dream dreams;
our women see visions, our men clear their eyes.
With bold new decisions your people arise.

Benediction and “What does the Lord Require?”

  1. What does the Lord require of you? What does the Lord require of you?
2. Justice, kindness, walk humbly with your God.
3. To seek justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see
T’was grace that taught my heart to fear and grace, my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed
Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come ‘tis grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home
My God has promised good to me, whose word my hope secures; God will my shield and portion be as long as life endures.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun.

Mark 1:21-28
 They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught.  They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, “What is this? A new teaching—with authority! He[a] commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee.

 Moderator: In the name of Jesus Christ, and on behalf of the Veradale United Church of Christ, we extend our hearts in Christian love, welcoming you into the company of this local church.
 Prayer:
 All: O God, we praise you for calling us to faith and for gathering us into this church, the body of Christ.  We thank you for your people gathered in this Veradale United Church of Christ and rejoice that you have increased our community of faith.  Together may we live in the Spirit, building one another up in love, sharing ion the life and worship of the church, and serving the world for the sake of Jesus Christ.  Amen.

“Hymn: “Won’t You Let Me Be Your Servant”  539 (NCH)
CCLI license #11038266
Won’t you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.
We are pilgrims on a journey, we are travelers on the road; we are here to help each other go the mile and bear the load.
I will hold the Christ-light for you in the shadow of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.
 I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow ’til we’ve seen this journey through.
When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony.
Won’t you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.
Benediction and “What does the Lord Require?”
1. What does the Lord require of you? What does the Lord require of you?
2. Justice, kindness, walk humbly with your God.
3. To seek justice, and love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.
