Sunday Worship Oct 31, and Bulletin

November 1, 2020 by veradaleucc Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone!

Can you bring a short message this Sunday about  “What motivates me to be giving of time, talent, and/or treasure to support Veradale UCC?”
Please, write a paragraph or two and return it in an email or read it on Sunday. Let me know if you are willing to give little message.

This Sunday, we continue worshiping through Zoom, Facebook, in person (please, let me know if you will be in-person), and through “Radio Daniel” our parking lot FM station 89.3 FM where you can listen to the worship service from your car radios in the church parking lot, the school parking lot, the street parking in front of the church and the school yard across the street.  If you want to get out of the house, keep healthy distancing, and listen to church — try our parking lot on Sunday morning!

The bulletin for Sunday worship is also below. Remember worship is seen and heard both on Facebook and ZOOM (NOTE this is a NEW link). Please, keep flexible about worshiping in person. If Washington State goes back to Phase 1, we will only have the worship team in the building. We are in this for the long haul.

Remember this Sunday we share communion. For those at home, have a cup of something and a bread or rice something for the time of communion. For those in the church building, we will have little to-go bags.

With blessings,
Pastor Gen

*Hymn: ”I Sing a Song of the Saints of God” 295 (NCH)
Public Domain

1. I sing a song of the saints of God, faithful their whole lives through, who bravely labored, lived, and died for the God they loved and knew.
And one was a doctor, and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: they were saints of God if you know what I mean. God help me to be one, too.

2. They loved their God and they lived that love. It was loving that made them strong; They did what was right, for Jesus’ sake, lived justly their whole lives long. And one was a prophet, and one was a priest, and one was slain by a fierce wild beast; there is no earthly reason, none in the least, why I shouldn’t be one, too.

3. They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still. The world is filled with living saints who choose to do God’s will.  You can meet them in school, on the road or at sea, in church, in a train, in a shop, or at tea; for the saints are folk like you and like me, and I mean to be one, too.

Listening for God

1 John 3:1-3
3:1 See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

3:2 Beloved, we are God’s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.

3:3 And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

Matthew 5:1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. 2 Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11 “Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely[b] on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Sharing of Holy Communion
Those at home have your drink and bread.
Those in church, expect a to-go bag.

Pastor: We gather at this time mindful of the many who have gathered before us and those yet to come. We are grateful that we have this day together. We remember that Jesus walked among our ancestors and the Holy Spirit dwells within us today. We remember that Jesus asked for us to remember him when we eat bread and drink of a cup.
When Jesus and his friends sat together at a Passover meal, Jesus took bread… Do this as often as you drink of it in remembrance of me.” Let us pray.
All: Come, Holy Spirit come. Bless this bread and this cup and all who have gathered here. We offer ourselves as Christ’s body in the world today. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
All: We thank you, God, for your presence known to us in the sharing of this meal and in the sharing of this community. We remember that you are among us still, in each of us, and in all of your creation. Bless us to more fully live as your people. Amen.

Hi Everyone!

Please, keep in prayer:

Marvin and his Dad who came home this week from the specialized care facility.

Kathy and Sally as Kathy heals from successful cancer surgery.

Al and Polly who continue to keep quarantine with the help of their family. Especially prayers for Polly who is tired most of the time.

Naomi and Justin as they move into their new home.

Also, please, let me know how you and your loved ones are doing. As the nights get longer and colder, we need each other’s support and prayers more than ever.

Hymn: “Won’t You Let Me Be Your Servant”  539 (NCH)
CCLI license #11038266
Won’t you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.

We are pilgrims on a journey, we are travelers on the road; we are here to help each other go the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you in the shadow of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow ’til we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony.

Won’t you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.

1 Thessalonians 2:1-8
2 You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, 2 but though we had already suffered and been shamefully mistreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 3 For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 4 but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. 5 As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; 6 nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, 7 though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. 8 So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us.
Matthew 22:34-46(NRSV)34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 37 He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42 “What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” 43 He said to them, “How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying,
44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?
45 If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?” 46 No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

1 How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent Word! What more can he say than to you he has said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
2 “Fear not, I am with you, O be not dismayed; for I am your God, and will still give you aid; I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
3 “When through the deep waters I call you to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be with you, your troubles to bless, and sanctify to you your deepest distress.
4 “When through fiery trials your pathway shall lie, my grace, all-sufficient, shall be your supply; the flame shall not hurt you; I only design your dross to consume and your gold to refine.
5 “The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to his foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.”

Hi Everyone!

How is it going in your part of the Land of Corona? Please, let me know.

A question from our Moderator, Wayne Shull: “What motivates you to be giving of time, talent, and/or treasure to support Veradale UCC?”

Please, write a paragraph or two and return it in an email. I will give these to Wayne who would like to have some to read every Sunday this month. Thanks!

1 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! that calls me from a world of care, and bids me at my Maker’s throne make all my wants and wishes known. In seasons of distress and grief, my soul has often found relief, and oft escaped the tempter’s snare by your return, sweet hour of prayer!

2 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! the joys I feel, the bliss I share of those whose anxious spirits burn with strong desires for your return! With them I hasten to the place where I would know my Savior’s face, and gladly take my station there, and wait for you, sweet hour of prayer!

3 Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer! whose wings shall my petition bear to One whose truth and faithfulness engage the waiting soul to bless. And since I’m bid to seek God’s face, believe God’s word, and trust God’s grace, I’ll cast on away my every care, and wait for you, sweet hour of prayer!

Listening for God

The Experience of Generosity

Philippians 4:1-9 New Revised Standard Version

Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.

Matthew 22:1-14 New Revised Standard Version

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

“But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Sunday Worship
This is so cool! Our virtual visit is at 10:30am Sunday.
This Sunday is our first of hopefully many virtual visits with other churches (maybe one each month). We will gather on Zoom and in the parking lot on 89.3FM Radio Daniel. At 10:30am we will virtually join Morning Star Missional Baptist Church at https://www.facebook.com/msmbcspokane/
(They have changed their worship time to 10:30 am starting this Sunday)

If you are in the church , on Zoom , or on Radio Daniel, we will watch and listen together. If you are on Facebook, go directly to their Facebook page and in the comments let them know that you are visiting with Veradale UCC. For those at home, have your communion ready. For those in the church, we will have communion to go. After worship with Morning Star, we will have our blessing of the animals, so, bring a little water and tune back to the Veradale UCC Facebook page. For those in the building have pictures of your pets. For those in the parking lot, bring your pets and a little water to bless.

Listening for God

Message to Young Hearts: What do you like to make and why?

Reading of Scripture

Philippians 2:1-13 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, 2 make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8     he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him
    and gave him the name
    that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Matthew 21:23-32 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. 30 The father[a] went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

  1. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee, Op’ning to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness,Fill us with the light of day!
  2. All you works with joy surround you, Earth and heav’n reflect your rays, Stars and angels sing around you, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain.Tell us what our praise should be.
  3. You are giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Loving Spirit, Father, Mother, All who love belong to you; Teach us how to love each other, By that love our joy renew.
  4. Mortals, join the happy chorus, Which the morning stars began; Boundless love is reigning o’er us, reconciling race and clan. Ever singing, move we forward, faithful in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us onward, In the triumph song of life.

Sunday Worship September 20, 2020 and Bulletin

September 18, 2020 by veradaleucc Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone!

What a year! Thanks to those who have been checking in. Please, let me know how you are doing with all this smoke!

Remember we have many ways to connect. There is Zoom which is much improved, Facebook, in person (please, let me know if you will be in-person), and through “Radio Daniel” our parking lot FM station 89.3 FM where you can listen to the worship service from your car radios in the church parking lot, the school parking lot, the street parking in front of the church and the school yard across the street. (It will not reach any further). If you want to get out of the house, keep healthy distancing, and listen to church — try our parking lot on Sunday morning!

We continue our show and tell messages with young hearts! Each week during September we will have a theme and everyone is invited to bring something that represents that theme.

If you are on Facebook, you can put the story related to the theme as a post on the Veradale UCC page or on your own Facebook page and then link it to the live stream.  On ZOOM you can put the story in the Chat and show whatever you have brought to the others on the app. If you send me the something for this Sunday’s theme by Saturday, I may be able to select 1-3 of them to be share live.

Sunday, September 20,  Being fair: ways to help us keep fair with each other and ourselves.

Sunday, September 27,  What do you like to make? Why?

The bulletin for Sunday worship is also below. Remember worship is seen and heard both on Facebook and ZOOM (link below). Please, keep flexible about worshiping in person. If Washington State goes back to Phase 1, we will only have the worship team in the building. We are in this for the long haul.

This Sunday, we plan to both worship in person as well as on-line and with the 89.3 fm in the parking lot. For those who come in person, expect:

  1. Enter through front door (church wings will both be closed).
  2. Only the one bathroom by the front doors will be used.
  3. Temperature and names will be taken at the door.
  4. Masks are required (we will have masks for forgetful folk).
  5. Chairs are set at 6’ apart. Please, do not move chairs.
  6. The Bibles, Hymnals, pens, pencils, coloring pages are all REMOVED from the sanctuary
  7. There will be absolutely no eating or drinking in the building.

Please, let me know if you are coming in person this Sunday so that I can be certain we have enough chairs set out. Thank you.

Volunteers are still needed to sanitize the bathroom every Sunday. We have volunteers for two Sundays of the month and need two more.

Also, I continue to be concerned about the projected tsunami of suicides predicted for October through December due to the foreclosures on homes, evictions from apartments, the costs of health care, the loss of jobs, and so much more. We will get through this together! Please, if you or someone you know is talking about harming themselves or feeling hopeless to the point of not wanting to live, call the

Message to Young Hearts: Being fair

Reading of Scripture

Philippians 1:21-30   21 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. 22 If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which I prefer. 23 I am hard pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; 24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. 25 Since I am convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, 26 so that I may share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.

27 Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spirit, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, 28 and are in no way intimidated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation. And this is God’s doing. 29 For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well— 30 since you are having the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.

Matthew 20:1-16  “For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; 4 and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. 5 When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. 6 And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ 7 They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ 8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ 9 When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage.10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, 12 saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ 13 But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? 14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
