We worship on the unceded traditional territory of the Spokane, Cayuse, Umatilla, Walla Walla, Coeur d’Alene, and other tribes. We acknowledge the history of indigenous genocide, removal, and erasure that continues to this day.  We recognize the role that Christian communities played in these injustices, and we recommit ourselves to seeking more peaceful, just, and neighborly ways of sharing this land with all who call it home.

Listening for God

Message to Young Hearts

Why do we share baptism with children?

Scripture

From second Isaiah, the story of the captives in Babylon being set free — not just them but everyone whom God has created is set free and will come together to do what is just.

Isaiah 43:1-7

But now thus says the Lord,    he who created you, O Jacob,    he who formed you, O Israel:Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;    I have called you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you,    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,    and the flame shall not consume you.

For I am the Lord your God,    the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.I give Egypt as your ransom,    Cush and Seba in exchange for you.Because you are precious in my sight    and honored and I love you,I give people in return for you,    nations in exchange for your life.Do not fear, for I am with you;    I will bring your offspring from the east,    and from the west I will gather you;I will say to the north, “Give them up,”    and to the south, “Do not withhold;bring my sons from far away    and my daughters from the end of the earth—everyone who is called by my name,    whom I created for my glory,    whom I formed and made.”

There was conflict among the followers of Jesus from the beginning. Jesus had been a follower of John and John had been great. How could the student overshadow the teacher… Well, tell the story of how the teacher lifts up the student.

Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

As the people were filled with expectation and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah,16 John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

(And)

Now when all the people were baptized and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Message: You are Mine, the Beloved.

Meditation in Music

Affirmation of Baptismal Pledges

Pastor: Members and friends in Christ, today we remember that Jesus was baptized. We remember how the early followers of Jesus joined together in community through the sacrament of baptism. We have shared in that old, old sacred practice and today, we remember and renew our unity in the affirmation of our baptism.

The sacrament of baptism is an outward and visible sign of the grace of God. Baptism is the sacrament through which we are united in Jesus Christ and given part in Christ’s ministry.  In this ritual we practice the death to separation from God and a rising to new life in a loving, healing relationship with God. In baptism, God works in us the power of forgiveness, the renewal of the Spirit, and the knowledge of the call to be God’s people in our everyday lives.

Affirmation

Pastor: All who wish to affirm their baptism are invited to respond to the following questions and pledges. (You can stand or sit whichever is best for you)

Pastor: Do you desire to affirm your baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ?

Response: I do.

Pastor Do you profess Jesus Christ as Lord, the one who governs your life, and Savior, the one who sets you free?

Response: I do.

Pastor Do you promise, by the grace of God, to be Christ’s disciple, to follow in the way of our Savior, to resist oppression and evil, to show love and justice, and to witness to the work and word of Jesus Christ as best you are able?

Response:  I promise, with the help of God.

Pastor Do you promise, according to the grace given you, to grow in the Christian faith and to be a faithful participant in the community of Jesus Christ, celebrating Christ’s presence and furthering Christ’s vision of compassion and justice in all the world?

Response: I promise, with the help of God.

Moment of silent reflection

Pastor: You have always been God’s beloved. Now, in the name of the God, known to us as the Creator, Redeemer, and Sanctifier, may you embrace that love. Amen”

Prayer

ALL: We give you thanks, O Holy One, for the renewal of our baptism celebrated today. We remember that this ancient practice joins us across all time and space with the ancestors of our faith. We affirm our dedication to the spiritual practice of following the way of Jesus. Embrace us all as sons and daughters in the one household of your love. Grant us grace to receive, nurture, and befriend our sisters and brothers and all the world you love.

Our Light moves into the World God Loves

Hymn: “I am the Light of the World” 584 (NCH)

Refrain:  I am the Light of the World You people come and follow me. If you follow and love, You'll learn the mystery of what you were meant to do and be.1. When the song of the angels is stilled. When the star in the sky is gone. When the sages and the shepherds have found their way home, the work of Christmas is begun! Refrain2. To find the lost and lonely one, to heal that broken soul with love, to feed the hungry children with warmth and good food, to feel the earth below the sky above! Refrain3. To free the prisoner from his chains, to make the powerful care, to rebuild the nations with strength of goodwill, see all God’s children everywhere! Refrain4. To bring hope to every task you do, to dance at a baby's new birth, to make music in an old person’s heart, and sing to the colors of the earth! Refrain

Welcoming the Light Christ

Hymn: “We Three Kings” from Carol Booklet

(Gifts for the baby enter with our “Wise Ones”)

1.   We three kings of Orient are bearing gifts we traverse afar field and fountain, moor and mountain following yonder star:

(Refrain): O Star of wonder, star of night star with royal beauty bright westward leading, still proceeding guide us to thy Perfect Light

2. Born a King on Bethlehem's plain. Gold, I bring to crown Him again. King forever, ceasing never over us all to rein: (Refrain)

3. Frankincense to offer have I. Incense owns a Deity nigh; pray'r and praising, all men raising worship Him, God most high: (Refrain)

4. Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes of life of gathering gloom. Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying sealed in the stone-cold tomb: (Refrain)

5. Glorious now behold Him arise. King and God and Sacrifice. “Alleluia, Alleluia,” Earth to heav'n replies: (Refrain):

Blessing of the gifts

Loving God, bless these gifts of our Wise Ones. Let them bring hope and comfort. Empower us to see the Christ Child in all children especially those who are in need. Amen

Isaiah 60:1-6 New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

Arise, shine, for your light has come,    and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.For darkness shall cover the earth    and thick darkness the peoples, but the Lord will arise upon you,    and his glory will appear over you.Nations shall come to your light    and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

Lift up your eyes and look around;    they all gather together; they come to you;your sons shall come from far away,    and your daughters shall be carried in their nurses’ arms. Then you shall see and be radiant;    your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you;    the wealth of the nations shall come to you.A multitude of camels shall cover you,    the young camels of Midian and Ephah;    all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense    and shall proclaim the praise of the Lord.

Matthew 2:1-12 New Revised Standard Version Updated Edition

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, magi from the east came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star in the east and have come to pay him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him, and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it has been written by the prophet:

‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ ” Then Herod secretly called for the magi and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” When they had heard the king, they set out, and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen in the east, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Pastor: Friends in Christ, we gather at our many tables mindful of the presence of God’s Spirit that is here with us.  We seek to honor the request of Jesus given in the scripture.  Of all the teachings Jesus gave to our ancestors, this he asked them and us to do for him to remember him.

When Jesus and his friends sat together at a Passover meal, Jesus took bread; giving God thanks and praise, he broke the bread.  He gave it to his friends saying, “Take this all of you and eat of it.  This is my body that is broken for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.”

After the meal had ended, Jesus poured out the cup and again he gave God thanks and praise.  He gave the cup to his friends and said, “Take this all of you and drink from it.  This is the cup of the new covenant.  Do this as often as you drink of it in remembrance of me.”

Let us pray.

All: Loving God, you are with us – all of us. You join us in the struggles and joys of this life. We thank you with humble hearts. Let your presence be felt among us.  Come, Holy Spirit come.  Bless this bread and this cup and all who have gathered in your Spirit.  Refresh us and renew us as Christ’s body in the world today.  In the name of Jesus, we pray.  Amen.

Silence as all who want to receive come forward. We will break bread and share a common cup or you can receive the packaged bread and drink,

Prayer of Thanksgiving

All: We thank you, God, for your presence at all our tables where we remember and experience the presence of Christ.  Help us to live more fully the way of Christ. Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and let us show forth your praise in our lives, through Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.

*Hymn: “Awake! Awake and Greet the New Morn” 107 (NCH)

1 Awake! Awake and greet the new morn, for angels herald its dawning. sing out your joy, for Jesus is born, behold! the Child of our longing. Come as a baby weak and poor, to bring all hearts together, to open wide the heavenly door, and lives now inside us forever.

2 To us, to all in sorrow and fear, Emmanuel comes a-singing, whose humble song is quiet and near yet fills the Earth with its ringing. Music to heal the broken soul and hymns of loving kindness, the thunder of the anthems roll to shatter all hate and injustice.

3 In deepest night Christ's coming shall be, when all the world is despairing, as morning light so quiet and free, so warm and gentle and caring. One without voice breaks forth in song, a lame one leaps in wonder,

the weak are raised above the strong, and weapons are broken asunder.

4 Rejoice, rejoice, take heart in the night, though cold the winter and cheerless, the rising sun shall crown you with light, be strong and loving and fearless; Love be our song and love our prayer, and love, our endless story, may God fill every day we share,  and bring us at last into glory.

Listening for God

Story of a Christmas Camel “Naomi with the big sad eyes”

Luke 2:41-52 41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover. 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[a50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.

51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Come to Bethlehem and see Christ whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, God our world now entering.  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
