Listening for God

Choir: The Gift of Love

Narrator, Naomi Hanvey: God created us, all of us, in God’s image and with the hope that we may one day reach our potential to love and care for creation as God does. The prophets and saints, our ancestors in faith, have carried this story through the ages. As it is written in John’s Gospel

John 1:1-5 read by Naomi Hanvey

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through the Word, and without this Word, not one thing came into being. What has come into being in the Word was life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

Choir: Carol for Advent

Narrator, Naomi Hanvey: This is a holy mystery – God who is beyond all our imagining, comes as one with us. God’s Word becomes flesh and dwells among us. God’s Word is Jesus and he shows us the way to fulfill God’s vision declared through his mother Mary.

Luke 1:39-55, read by Naomi Hanvey

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country,  where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be[a] a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

 And Mary said,

“My soul magnifies the Lord,    and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked with favor on the lowly state of his servant.    Surely from now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me,    and holy is his name; indeed, his mercy is for those who fear him    from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his arm;    he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has brought down the powerful from their thrones    and lifted up the lowly; he has filled the hungry with good things    and sent the rich away empty.

He has come to the aid of his child Israel,    in remembrance of his mercy, according to the promise he made to our ancestors,    to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

ALL: “My Heart Sings Out” 106 (NCH) vs 1 and 2

My heart sings out with joyful praise to God who raises me, who came to me when I was low and changed by destiny. The Holy One, the Living God, is always full of grace to those who seek their Maker’s will in every time and place.

The arm of God is strong and just to scatter all the proud. The tyrants tumble from their thrones and vanish in a cloud. The hungry all are satisfied; the rich are sent away. The poor of Earth who suffer long will welcome God’s new day.

Narrator, Naomi Hanvey: Jesus comes to us, born poor with a manger for a cradle.

ALL and String-A-Lings: “Away in a Manger” verses 1 and 2 in Carol Booklet

Away in a manger no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the sky looked down where he lay, the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes. I love thee Lord Jesus, look down from the sky and stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Narrator, Naomi Hanvey: The Gospel of Luke 2:8-10

Now in that same region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.  Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for see, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: continues the revelation of God’s solidarity with the least among us when God sends angels to the shepherds in the fields and not to the powerful of the world.

Choir: Carol of the Little Shepherd

Narrator, Naomi Hanvey:  The Gospel of Luke continues the revelation of God’s solidarity with the least among us when God sends angels to the shepherds in the fields and not to the powerful of the world.  When we sing “angels WE have heard” we join with the company of shepherds and we, too, listen in awe to the Good News that God is with us.

ALL and String-A-Lings: “Angels We have Heard on High” 125( NCH)

Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains.  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Shepherds, why this jubilee?  Why your joyous strains prolong?  What the gladsome tidings be which inspire our heavenly song?  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Come to Bethlehem and see Christ Whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King.  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

See Him in a manger laid, Whom the choirs of angels praise; Mary, Joseph, lend your aid, While our hearts in love we raise.  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!  Gloria, in excelsis Deo!

Listening for God

Scripture:  Psalm 30 read by Heidi Fowler

I will extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up    and did not let my foes rejoice over me.O Lord my God, I cried to you for help,    and you have healed me.O Lord, you brought up my soul from Sheol,    restored me to life from among those gone down to the Pit.

Sing praises to the Lord, O you God’s faithful ones,    and give thanks to God’s holy name. For God’s anger is but for a moment;   God’s favor is for a lifetime.Weeping may linger for the night,    but joy comes with the morning.

As for me, I said in my prosperity,    “I shall never be moved.”By your favor, O Lord,    you had established me as a strong mountain;you hid your face;    I was dismayed.

To you, O Lord, I cried,    and to the Lord I made supplication:“What profit is there in my death,    if I go down to the Pit?Will the dust praise you?    Will it tell of your faithfulness?10 Hear, O Lord, and be gracious to me!    O Lord, be my helper!”

11 You have turned my mourning into dancing;    you have taken off my sackcloth    and clothed me with joy,12 so that my soul may praise you and not be silent.    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

Hymn: “My Heart Sings Out with a Joyful Praise “106 (NCH) vs 1

 Isaiah 6:1-9 NRSVUE

1 A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse,    and a branch shall grow out of his roots.2 The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,    the spirit of wisdom and understanding,    the spirit of counsel and might,    the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.3 His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see    or decide by what his ears hear,4 but with righteousness he shall judge for the poor    and decide with equity for the oppressed of the earth;he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.5 Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist    and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

6 The wolf shall live with the lamb;    the leopard shall lie down with the kid;the calf and the lion will feed together,    and a little child shall lead them.7 The cow and the bear shall graze;    their young shall lie down together;    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.8 The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,    and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.9 They will not hurt or destroy    on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord    as the waters cover the sea.

Luke 1:67-79 NRSVUE

67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,    for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them.69 He has raised up a mighty savior for us    in the house of his child David,70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,71     that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us.72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors    and has remembered his holy covenant,73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,to grant us 74     that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness    in his presence all our days.76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,    for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,77 to give his people knowledge of salvation    by the forgiveness of their sins.78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,    the dawn from on high will break upon us,79 to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,    to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Closing Hymn: “Isaiah the Prophet Has Written of Old” 108 (NCH)

1. Isaiah the prophet has written of old how God's new creation shall come. Instead of the thorn tree, the fir tree shall grow; the wolf shall lie down with the lamb, the lamb, the wolf shall lie down with the lamb.

2. The mountains and hills shall break forth into song, the peoples be led forth in peace; The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of God as the waters cover the sea, the sea, as the waters cover the sea.

3. Yet nations still prey on the meek of the world, and conflict turns parent from child. Your people despoil all the sweetness of earth; the brier and the thorn tree grow wild, grow wild, the brier and the thorn tree grow wild.

4. God, bring to fruition your will for the earth, that no one shall hurt or destroy, That wisdom and justice shall reign in the land and your people shall go forth in joy, in joy, your people shall go forth in joy.
