Sunday Worship Sept 27 2020, and Bulletin

September 24, 2020 by veradaleucc Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone!

Thanks to those who have been checking in. Please, let me know how you are doing this week.

We have many opportunities for community!

Worship

We have  Zoom, Facebook, in person (please, let me know if you will be in-person), and through “Radio Daniel” our parking lot FM station 89.3 FM where you can listen to the worship service from your car radios in the church parking lot, the school parking lot, the street parking in front of the church and the school yard across the street.  If you want to get out of the house, keep healthy distancing, and listen to church — try our parking lot on Sunday morning!

We continue our show and tell messages with young hearts! This Sunday, September 27:  What do you like to make? Why?

The bulletin for Sunday worship is also below. Remember worship is seen and heard both on Facebook and ZOOM (link below). Please, keep flexible about worshiping in person. If Washington State goes back to Phase 1, we will only have the worship team in the building. We are in this for the long haul.

Vigil’s for Grieving Together

The Faith Leaders and Leaders of Conscience of Eastern Washington and North Idaho (FLLC) invite all to join us in Grieving Together. Inspired by The Mourning Project. This national movement’s goal is to provide opportunities for mourning the more than 200,000 US citizens who have died to Covid-19 as well as “all the other losses of the unconstrained pandemic: unsafe schools, unsafe workplaces, unemployment. By gathering, we reclaim our unity and our commitment to peaceful elections, and defuse the rising risk of violence.”

Join the vigils at the Faith Leaders and Leaders of Conscience Facebook page or in the parking lot or on the front lawn of our church (with masks and distancing) of Veradale UCC, 611N Progress Road on Tuesday, October 6, 13,  20, and  27 from 6-6:30pm. Tie purple ribbons on the trees and bushes with messages about your grief.

Everyone is invited to bring their own flameless candle (cell phone), purple ribbons, and messages.

Please join our vigil from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

Passing the Peace of Christ and Welcoming the Light of Christ

Hymn: “Won’t You Let Me Be Your Servant”  539 (NCH)

CCLI license #11038266

Won’t you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.

We are pilgrims on a journey, we are travelers on the road; we are here to help each other go the mile and bear the load.

I will hold the Christ-light for you in the shadow of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, speak the peace you long to hear.

I will weep when you are weeping; when you laugh, I’ll laugh with you. I will share your joy and sorrow ’til we’ve seen this journey through.

When we sing to God in heaven we shall find such harmony, born of all we’ve known together of Christ’s love and agony.

Won’t you let me be your servant, let me be as Christ to you? Pray that I may have the grace to let you be my servant, too.

Listening for God

Message to Young Hearts: What do you like to make and why?

Reading of Scripture

Philippians 2:1-13 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, 2 make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was[a] in Christ Jesus,

6 who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
    as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form,
8     he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

9 Therefore God also highly exalted him
    and gave him the name
    that is above every name,
10 so that at the name of Jesus
    every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

12 Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed me, not only in my presence, but much more now in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Matthew 21:23-32 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

23 When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, “By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?” 24 Jesus said to them, “I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. 25 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?” And they argued with one another, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 26 But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.” 27 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29 He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. 30 The father[a] went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. 31 Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

Message: Look to the Interest of Others

Our Light moves into the World God Loves

Hymn:“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore You” 4 (NCH)

  1. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee, Op’ning to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; Drive the dark of doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness,Fill us with the light of day!
  2. All you works with joy surround you, Earth and heav’n reflect your rays, Stars and angels sing around you, Center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing fountain.Tell us what our praise should be.
  3. You are giving and forgiving, Ever blessing, ever blest, Wellspring of the joy of living, Ocean depth of happy rest! Loving Spirit, Father, Mother, All who love belong to you; Teach us how to love each other, By that love our joy renew.
  4. Mortals, join the happy chorus, Which the morning stars began; Boundless love is reigning o’er us, reconciling race and clan. Ever singing, move we forward, faithful in the midst of strife, Joyful music leads us onward, In the triumph song of life.
